How to assign different deadlines to groups

Overview

When running group-based activities (such as peer reviews) that require separate assignments or different deadlines for each group, creating multiple LMS links can result in extra gradebook columns.

By standardizing your assignment titles in Perusall and using LMS Deep Links, you can assign different versions or deadlines to specific groups while aggregating all scores into a single gradebook column in your LMS.

When should I use this method?

• Use this duplicate title method if you want separate groups to have different deadlines while keeping all scores combined into one single LMS gradebook column.
• Use a differentiated assignment if you want to assign different content/documents to different students or groups under a single deadline.
• Use a peer review assignment if you need multi-stage student submission and peer evaluation workflows (rather than standard content annotations across groups).

Step 1: Set your LMS gradebook settings in Perusall

1. Open your Perusall course and navigate to Settings > Scoring > LMS grade sync.
2. Under LMS gradebook column management, select Instructor creates deep links in LMS.
3. Click Save changes.

Step 2: Create group assignments with identical titles

1. Create the assignment for your first group or deadline in Perusall.
2. Under Options, use Assigned to to select the specific student group, and click Ok to save.
3. Duplicate the assignment for remaining groups and adjust deadlines as needed.
4. Important: Give all variations the exact same assignment title (e.g., Small Group Peer Review #1).

Note: If you would like to assign different content to groups with the same deadline, try using a differentiated assignment.

Step 3: Create a single deep link in your LMS course

1. In your LMS (Canvas, Brightspace, Blackboard, Moodle), navigate to your course module/content area.
2. Add a new Perusall Deep Link.
3. Select the shared assignment title from the dropdown menu and click Link to this assignment.

Note: Because the titles match, Perusall automatically sends the assignments into the same column in your LMS gradebook.

How it works

When students click the single LMS deep link, Perusall automatically routes each student to their assigned group's assignment version while syncing all student scores back into one single gradebook column in your LMS.
