How do I create a differentiated assignment?

  • Updated

Differentiated assignments allow instructors to assign different content to different students, all in one assignment, and most importantly, in one gradebook column that can be sent back to your LMS.

Differentiated assignments override course grouping settings, so students will see all conversations from the other students assigned to the same content.

Follow these steps to create a differentiated assignment:

  1. On the course home page, click Library > Add Content, and add a folder to contain the documents you will assign: click Add > Folder.
  2. Open the folder by clicking the next to the folder, and then drag and drop the appropriate documents into that folder. (You can also use the white selection boxes to select multiple items at once, and then click [#] selected > Move selected to folder.)
  3. Now click on the Assignments tab at the top of the course home page, click the dropdown arrow next to Add assignment, and select Add differentiated assignment.
  4. Under Basics, enter an Assignment Name and Submission Deadline.
  5. Under the Content tab, select the folder you created from the list, which will allow you to indicate which students should be assigned to which documents.
  6. Assign specific students by typing their names, and/or using the dropdown.  You can also randomly assign students to the documents by clicking Randomize Assignments.
    • If your course is using specify groups (under Settings > Grouping), you can choose to assign by groups.
  7. Set other assignment preferences in Options and Scoring if desired, and then click OK.

When you create differentiated assignments, they will appear as one assignment.

  • In the assignments tab, instructors will see one assignment, with each content and its assignees listed.  All of the grades for these assignments will show up under a single gradebook column.Differentiated Assignment Instructor View.png

To view the assignment, click Open, and in Assignment Information, using the dropdown, select a student to view the content assigned to them, along with the comments from all other students assigned to the same content. (Selecting another student assigned to the same content will give you the same view.)

  • Students will only see the content they were assigned (see example below).
