What is a deep link?

  • Updated

Deep Linking is a method that allows for direct linking to items in your Perusall course (i.e. assignments or library items), and is a feature of LTI 1.3 integration. Deep links can be tied to a gradebook column, or can be used to simply guide users to specific points within Perusall without impacting students' grades. If you are familiar with Perusall's LTI 1.1 integration, deep linking is a more streamlined and effective alternative to the individual assignment grade sync method.

Why use deep links?

Some users prefer to use deep links over auto-generated gradebook columns in order to have more control of how students access assignments or library items in Perusall (see the Integration Features page for your respective LMS to read more about grade sync methods with LTI 1.3). Deep links may also be useful if you prefer to stagger the visibility of assignments within your LMS. You are also able to pull assignment information from Perusall into your LMS via the deep link process, which is not available with Perusall creates gradebook columns in LMS for each Perusall assignment automatically.

If you are using the Canvas 1.3 integration, you will have both gradebook columns and deep links auto-generated by Perusall when using the Perusall creates gradebook columns in LMS for each Perusall assignment automatically feature under Settings > Scoring > LMS grade sync > LMS gradebook column management. You can still choose to create your own deep links, if desired.

How do I create deep links?

First, ensure your institution has upgraded to the LTI 1.3 integration. Next, refer to the Integration Features page for your specific Learning Management System.

Implementing deep links with Perusall.

  • When deep linking to an assignment in Perusall, you have the following options:
    • Create individual assignment links as opposed to having one generic Perusall link.
    • Associate a grade with the deep linked item (or not by deselecting import grading information during the deep link setup).
    • Import assignment instructions upon creation of the deep link.
  • When deep linking to a library item in Perusall, you have the following options:
    • Link students directly to a video, text, or other resource in your Perusall library.
    • Create deep links that are not associated with a grade/assignment (this process may be beneficial to those who wish to use a mixture of deep linking and auto-generated gradebook columns). Contact Perusall Support to learn more about this unique use case.
  • When deep linking to a folder in Perusall, you have the following options:
    • Link students directly to a specific folder in your Perusall library instead of an individual item or assignment.
    • Select a folder from the Folder section (located right below Documents) on the LTI content selection page (deep link window) and click Link to this folder.
    • Create deep links that do not pass grade data back to the LMS (folder deep links do not create grade sync line items).
