Grouping settings and comment visibility

If students or instructors are unable to see comments, this is often related to grouping settings.

Students

Please ensure that your filter is set to All comments at the top of the reading, and use the All conversations icon on right to view comments.  If you do not see comments, please pass this article to your instructor.

Instructors

Under Settings > Grouping, check Behavior when new students join the course. If this is set to Keep students ungrouped, students who joined after groups were created may not see peers’ comments.

→ Updating this setting to Automatically place students into groups and saving will automatically and retroactively place students into existing groups within your Group sets.

If you do not wish to use grouping, selecting No groups will allow everyone to see all comments.

Course enrollment and account authentication

If your course is integrated through an Learning management system, students must launch Perusall directly from the LMS course links in order to be enrolled and connected correctly.  LMS created accounts do not have a password, so they will not be able to login at app.perusall.com. (For other login methods, please see How do I access my account?)

Students should not create a new account directly on the Perusall website, as this can result in a separate, unlinked account.

Common messages related to this include:

  • “I keep registering my account, but I’m not receiving the email to confirm my email address.”
  • “You already have a Perusall account under this email address, and we need to connect your account to your school’s Learning Management System.”

If prompted to confirm or verify an account, students should:

  • Review their spam, promotions, or junk folder if the message does not appear in their main inbox and follow the verification link provided
  • If you did not receive this, please ensure your school IT admins or helpdesk have whitelisted the following email addresses: perusall@perusall.com and perusall@mg.perusall.com
    • In addition, please respond to your existing support email with your:
      • Name
      • Email address
      • Course name
      • Name and email address of your instructor

If the course is connected through the LMS but the student is struggling to login through the links, while we trouble shoot they can follow these steps (from Accessing Perusall outside your school’s learning management system):

  • Select Forgot password on the Perusall login page (app.perusall.com)
  • Enter the email address associated with their LMS profile
  • Set a password for their LMS-integrated account (which initially does not have one)
