Hashtags allow students and instructors to categorize comments by topic. To create one, simply type # followed by a word or phrase (no spaces), such as #ChainRule or #LiteraryDevice.
Creating hashtags
Both students and instructors can create hashtags directly within a comment. Once a hashtag has been used in a course, typing # will trigger a dropdown menu of existing tags to choose from.
Pro-tip
Instructors, You don’t have to wait for students to start typing. You can pre-populate your course with specific tags (or clean up unwanted ones) by clicking Hashtags in the left navigation bar to open the management panel.
Using hashtags
Often, hashtags will be generated by students organically (and often just for fun!), but you may elect to use hashtags strategically as well. For example, you might ask students to comment on and tag instances they see of something in the text, such as:
- a particular literary device
- a particular mathematical proof technique
- a particular type of historical evidence
- a particular type of scientific experiment
Filtering by Hashtag
To view a curated stream of all comments associated with a specific tag:
- Select the tag from the Hashtags list in the left navigation bar.
- To see a comment in its original context within the document, click the three dots on the right side of the comment box.
Remove hashtags
To remove a hashtag, click it under the Hashtags list in the left menu, then click disable.
Students won't see the hashtag suggested in comments or the left menu, but it won't be removed from existing comments. You can restore it anytime by creating a new hashtag with the same name.
