When you open a document in Perusall, you'll see icons on the top and right sidebars for tools that enhance your social learning experience.
Top bar
Use the Annotate text tool to comment on or ask a question about specific text. Simply highlight the text you'd like to annotate. |

Use Figure selection to pinpoint a single part of a figure, click or tap to indicate the point you want to comment on. To highlight a region of a figure, click and drag (long press and then swipe on a touchscreen device) to draw a rectangle that indicates the part of the figure you want to comment on. |

Use the Print icon if printing is enabled for a particular document

Use Copy to Clipboard to copy your highlighted text, then you can paste the material into a comment. |

The Wolfram|Alpha tool allows users to look up any term in course content by highlighting the text. See more information here. |

Use the Options dropdown to zoom in or out of the document and adjust the page. |
|
Use the Filter tool to customize your reading experience. For example, you can filter to no comments, by person, group, etc. |

Select the Get Help dropdown to reach out to Perusall Support, search our knowledge base, view keyboard shortcuts, and or sign up for future webinars. |

Select the Grid for quick navigation to create a Book or Journal Club or to join a new course with an enrollment code. You can lead Workshops or create new courses directly from the grid. |
Right side bar
Select Assignment information to see the assignment submission deadline, instructions, and navigate through multi-part assignments. If this icon is not visible, you are viewing content directly from the course Library. |

Select Members of my group to see what group number you're in, and the other members of your group. |
|
When you click on a highlight, or comment, the content will be displayed in the Current Conversation. |
|
Select All Conversations to browse the full list of students' comments and questions. |
|
Select My Starred Comments to browse a list of students' comments and questions that you have starred for later review. |

Page Thumbnails provides a page-at-a-glance view for a given resource, allowing for a quick view of the entire document. |

Select Table of Contents to navigate the document via the table of contents. In some instances the Table of Contents may not be available. |
|
Select Search to search the contents of the entire book. |
|
Use the Dictionary to look up definitions by highlighting a specific word in the document. |
|
When students or instructors respond to one of your comments, you are notified in the Notifications panel. |
|
Select Bookmark to save the location you are reading in. |
|
In the Notes panel, you can take notes that are private to you (or you can share them with other course members). Type text, or highlight text or pictures to copy in, with links back to the document. |

In the Read-aloud panel, you can scroll the text to anywhere in the document, and then click the start button to start reading aloud. Click the Start thread button while text is being read to start a conversation based on text you just heard. |
