How do I set up peer review with groups?

  • Updated

We've introduced a new format for peer review review assignments - now students get credit for submitting their work.

Overview

If you're looking for a peer review experience that allows your students to work in groups and see each other's feedback, this page walks through two options using other features within the platform to achieve that goal!

Step 1: Create a student upload folder

In both methods below, you will need to create a student upload folder, and task your students with uploading content. To add a student upload folder, follow these steps:

  1. In your course, navigate to Library > Add content > Folder > Student upload folder.
  2. Give your folder a name and description, ensure Allow students to upload documents into this folder is enabled, and click Ok.
  3. Instruct each student to upload a single item.  Valid upload file types for students:
    1. PDFs
    2. EPUBs
    3. Images
    4. Word documents
    5. PowerPoints
    6. Source code files.

Pro tip

After students upload their content, you may choose to edit and hide the upload folders from student view -- only allowing them to access the content through future assignments.

Step 2: Create your assignment

After students have uploaded content, you can then create a peer review using differentiated assignments or multi-part assignments.

  • Perks

    • A differentiated assignment allows you to assign different content to different students, with a common deadline.
    • All scores will be in one Perusall gradebook column.
    • You can assign to groups of students.
    • Students will only see the assignment(s) specified for them.
    • Course groups are not enforced in a differentiated assignment, so students will see comments from all other students who are assigned the same content.

    Limitations

    • Each student can only be assigned to one document per differentiated assignment, which also means you can only assign groups to read one document per assignment.
  • Perks

    • Multi-part assignments allow to assign multiple documents into one assignment.
    • You can assign to groups of students.
    • Optionally, you could create and include quizzes that mimic a rubric for reviewers to score submissions.
    • Students will only see the assignment(s) specified for them.
    • If all assignments have same title, you can sync all to one LMS gradebook column.

    Limitations

    • You will need to create a unique assignment for each group of authors and reviewers.
    • Each individual assignment will create a unique Perusall gradebook column.
    • Course groups are in effect, so you may need to adjust grouping to ensure all comments are visible.
