Adding Perusall to your Course
To set up your course, navigate to Site info > Manage Tools, and scroll down to External tools, and select Perusall. Then, click finish, and Perusall will appear in your left navigation. Click Perusall to create a blank Perusall course.
Roster Sync
Each time you launch Perusall from Sakai, a roster sync is run in the background. Any students that have added to your LMS course will be added to your Perusall course roster (under the Students tab), and any that have unenrolled will be removed from the course.
Grade Sync
If you would like to automatically sync the average of all Perusall assignments to a single gradebook column in Sakai, launch into Perusall, select Settings > Scoring > Grade sync to LMS > Automatically sync students' average scores to LMS, and then click Save changes.
If you would like to sync individual assignment scores to multiple columns in the Sakai gradebook, launch into Perusall, select Settings > Scoring > LMS Grade Sync > Grade sync to LMS set to Automatically sync individual assignment scores back to the LMS, and then click Save changes.
(For more info, see Grade sync in LTI 1.3.)
Assignment-Specific (Deep links) Creation
In either case, there is no need to create individual links to each Perusall assignment because, as a default, Perusall will automatically create gradebook columns in your Sakai course and sync.
If you plan on creating your own deep links in Sakai that point to individual Perusall assignments, make sure you set Settings > Scoring > Grade Sync to LMS > LMS gradebook column management to Instructor creates deep links in LMS. Otherwise, you'll end up with duplicate gradebook columns in Sakai -- one set from the links you created, and another from the gradebook columns Perusall automatically created.
Then, you can create assignment links through either of the following methods:
- Lessons
- Create your assignments in Perusall first.
- In your Sakai course, navigate to Lessons > Add Content > Add Learning App > Launch External Tool Configuration.
- In the next screen, select Perusall. A window will pop up that will allow you to select a Perusall assignment to link.
- Finally, open the assignment, and it will take you directly into the assignment.
- Assignments
- Create your assignments in Perusall first.
- In your Sakai course, navigate to Assignments > Add.
- Within the Assignment,
- You can skip the title, but you must insert Instructions in order to create the assignment. If your instructions for the assignment are already in Perusall, you can copy and paste them here, or simply say "Instructions in Perusall."
- Scroll all the way down to Submission Type, and set it to External Tool (LTI).
- Click Select External Tool (LTI) > Perusall, and a window will pop up that will allow you to select a Perusall assignment to link.
- Enable Load this tool in a new tab.
- Allow unlimited resubmission.
- Enable Grade this assignment.
- Grade scale: Points
- Max Points: We recommend using the higher number from your Perusall course's Assignment Score Range (found under Settings > Scoring > General > Assignment Score Range).
- Enable Send released grades to the Gradebook
- Create new Gradebook item
- Post.
- Finally, open the assignment, and it will take you directly into the assignment.
