Can students upload their own documents to the course?

  • Updated

Student folders let students upload PDF'S, videos, webpages, Word documents, and PowerPoints to a course Library. Instructors can use these uploads to create assignments like any other library document.

Adding a folder

  1. To add a student upload folder to the Library, click the green Add content button, select folder,  enable Allow students to upload documents into this folder, and press OK.
  1. (New) If you want to limit access, toggle Only specific Students may upload to this folder and type/select the names of the permitted students.

  2. (Optional) You can also toggle Hide this folder from Students who do not have permission to upload to completely conceal it from the rest of the class. Click OK to save

Uploading to the folder

  1. Go to the course library.
  2. Click the folder with the blue upload icon.
  3. Select + Upload to this folder and select your file type. Your name will be added to the file name automatically. Students can only upload one document per folder.

Managing student upload folders and restricting folder access

Instructors can move materials from the Library to the student upload folder by dragging the document using the three grey lines next to it.

To hide the folder from students, instructors can click Edit in the folder and select Hide this folder from students.

As mentioned above, instructors can further manage or change who has permission to upload to a student folder at any time:

  • Click Edit next to the folder in the library.

  • Under the folder settings, check Only specific Students may upload to this folder to specify your list of students.

  • Toggle Hide this folder from Students who do not have permission to upload if you want to keep the folder hidden from unassigned students, or Hide this folder from all Students if you want to temporarily pause all student submissions.

Creating assignments from the student folder

After students upload materials to the student folder you can create a basic assignment, multipart assignment, or a differentiated assignment.

If you like, you can create multipart assignments that include both student folder materials and materials outside of the specific folder.  Course grouping settings apply to the student folder materials just like any other document in the library.

As with material outside of the student folder, multipart assignments with different parts corresponding to different documents will result in students being in different groups corresponding to the groups selected for each document.
